White dressers could have pastel painted
drawer pulls. Tulle can be used to make lamp shade covers, letting the
light come through in soft rainbow tones. Choose accessories like fairy
tale dolls in royal dresses, and shiny rhinestone tiaras on a high shelf.
Satin ribbons tied into bows to hold back the canopy and around the lampshades
add to this look.
Curtains could be a pastel solid material onto which
you hot glue "jewels" befitting your royal little girl. These
are inexpensive and available at craft stores and large chain stores.
How about a distant castle on a hilltop painted onto a wall? Is that a
young Prince standing halfway up the hill? Don't forget large comfy pillows
to toss on the floor. Preferably with "jewels" glued to the
edges. Several are needed for comfortable lounging! These are easily made
from standard bed pillows and covered in soft fabrics. Glittery trim and
jewels should be kept to the edges to avoid scratching a soft little face!
Ground this "floating" look with throw
rugs that pull the theme together.
Beautiful childrens bed canopies work well here. Sleep well, little Princess!
A
Nautical Look is good for boys or girls. Easy to do and easy on
the eyes. Think watery colors of blues and greens and aquas. Soft sky
blues and deeper blues to "anchor" the look. ( Could not help
myself there! Grin) Boats, signal flags, compass "stars", ship's
wheels, and waves all can be done in the "simplest" form to
the more sophisticated realistic form, depending on your child's age.
Border papers, and prints can be found in both styles. As
can throw rugs!.
While toy-like boats are fun, the more realistic look will last longer
as far as "growing" with your child. But if your little one
is very young, go with the childlike look. They grow up too quickly as
it is!
I would use aqua on the walls, perhaps shading it down
the wall to end in a truer, deeper blue. Or use white wainscoting to divide
an aqua or pale blue upper wall from a deep blue below. This sets the
mood. Red and white add punch and a true nautical feel. Add yellow for
contrast and to make the blues "pop".
With printed linens and nautical lamps and accessories,
you'll have a great look! A real life preserver hung on the wall can be
used to hang jammies and other clothes if "s" hooks are hung
from the life preserver's ropes. A ship's wheel works well for this, also.
It also makes a neat headboard! Just hang behind a twin bed and stencil
your child's name on it. Be sure to firmly attach to the wall for safety!
Ship's lanterns would look good on a high shelf, and
for regular lighting, there are many nautical
lamps
to
choose from. Paint ships wheels around drawer pulls. Don't forget throw
pillows! Essential for curling up! If you use a border paper, use the
colors from it for the pillows. For an extra special treat, make a lighthouse
playhouse. Simple plywood construction. It doesn't have to be very large.
Just big enough for two kids to sit in and daydream of Sea Captain days
ahead!
I sure hope this sets your own creativity in motion.
