Decorating your home is like the completion of the "1000 mile journey"... you begin it and finish it "one step at a time".

Decorating a room entails the same thought processes as planning for a specific type of party like a birthday party, or a halloween party.

What all will I need to create this atmosphere for this specific party? Will I need orange and black paper mache to place over the walls to create the colors for the perfect halloween decor? Will I need fake spider webs to place in the corners?

How about the decorative accents like carved out pumpkins, and black cat statues and rubber spiders and things? And the more you "think about it", the more specific you will be. And, the more choices you will have.

When decorating a room, think about what the room will be used for. WIll it be primarily for entertaining guests? Then, maybe I should add tile or wood floors instead of carpet? Should I paint the walls soft pastels for the serenity, or should I use bright colors for the stimulating effect? One would work well, and the other wouldn't. A little thought before you begin goes a long way when you are trying to decorate a room.

There's an old saying among carpenters... "measure twice and cut once" which really fits here. Think carefully about what kind of atmosphere you want to have, what decorative accents you will need and so on.

Its a lot of work, really, but the joys of having done it yourself will make you forget about all the planning and effor that went into it.

Some of you will know what colors you will want, know what the room will be used for, and even know what the best decorative accents should be, but just don't quite know how to put it all together. Remember, the internet is a wealth of knowledge and if you will do the research you will probably find the help you need.

If you need help putting it all together or just need someone to walk you through it, be sure to consider "Decor Doc" decorating via the internet! The small investment for this service, is well worth it!

Either way, go slowly, do a lot of planning, and go for it! Happy Decorating!

Hi Janie,

Thanks for giving me a way to post comments or questions and get feedback from like-minded individuals. Since most
of the people that come to your site are interested in Home Decorating or Home and Garden, I imagine I will likely encounter many who may have ideas on, or have dealt with situations such as mine. So... again... thanks for giving me this opportunity to ask my question. Here are my questions:

1. Getting a tropical look in pots. - Does anyone know how to create a tropical look outside a home without creating a safe haven for snakes? I live in North Central Florida and have tried planting tropical plants, in the ground, in beds, around the outside of my home, for years. Each time I do, I find snakes hiding in them. Needless to say, I did away with the in ground tropical planting. Then I tried planting a few tropical plants in pots so that I could see the snakes if they came around. Most of the ones I planted didn’t do well in pots because the soil dried out so fast. I just couldn’t keep up with watering them so often. Does anyone know which of the tropical plants do best in pots that require minimal watering? Any ideas will be most appreciated?

2. Old Pine Cabinet needs old paint removed. - Does anyone know what the easiest way is to remove old paint from a wood cabinet without using toxic chemicals? The cabinet is old pine and I’m sure that the paint I have to remove has lead in it.

I hate to sound cynical but one of the most powerful tools in decorating from the internet is return policies. Colors on the monitor can very from reality and it is tough to tell some times what a piece is going to look like. Before ordering check the return policy. This might give you the chance to try with the option to return if it is not what you expected. I don’t think buying to try is dishonest one site I was on www.rugsale.com even calls what is clearly just a return policy a “trial period”. With area rugs it is even more important to make sure the color on the monitor is what ends up on your floor. Just a thought...

Hello Anonymous...
This blog is for people interested in home decorating. Sometimes comments can seem negative, but actually serve as a starting point for discussions which offer opinions on both sides of the topic. In the process, people learn of things which they may not have heard otherwise.

Any comments or suggestions, good or bad, related to home decorating, are welcome on this blog.

I must moderate this blog because spammers have found blogs to be a wonderful place to promote their sites or products and this is not the place for that.

So, don't feel you are sounding cynical, you have a valid point and are quite right about the color on the computer sometimes being quite different from what you actually see in person.

Thanks Janie,

Great information. We recently remodeled our master bathroom with a southwest theme. We topped off the job with some really nice original photos from a Web site called Bammstar Photography. I think if you Google Bammstar it sould come up. They have some really nice work to choose from and the prices are incredibly reasonable. I bought 5 prints for our bath for less than $30. Needless to say it was the wall art that made our bathroom such a showpiece. I only wish I would have read your blog prior to starting the remodel. No worry though. We have a kitchen remodel in our future. I'll be in touch. Thanks again.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the comments. I went to Bamstar and, yes, they do have nice photos which, obviously, can be made into prints.

I am glad your project turned out well. And... often people overlook art prints or paintings as a "finishing" touch or enhancement to decor.

Kudos to you and I wish you much success with your next project.

Warmly,
Janie
